Apple Picking in Oka

I’m not even going to pretend; I should have posted this WAY back in September, but if I’m being honest, I can’t really believe just how quickly the months have gone by. So…yea, forgive me. 😁 So! One of the first activities we did once we got to Montreal, was go apple picking! It’s a Quebec staple and nothing says the beginning of fall, like legit the whole province stacking up on apples. This year, we decided to be different and chose an orchard that also allowed you to pick pears and plums along with apples. Bonus!

“Cloudless”
As we were picking apples and pears, I decided to slack and take shots of our surroundings. I couldn’t get over how there was practically not a cloud in the sky. I also made the sun glare on purpose, because I thought it would add an extra “element” to the shot.

“Plum”
I loved how the area where we could pick the plums, looked so Mediterranian, like a mini vineyard in the middle of Oka. I have to say that I wasn’t the biggest fan of this genre of plums, but my mother LOVED them and possibly devoured a tree’s worth of plums. I decided to edit this shot a little bit moodier because it really did feel like we were in Europe.

“Stack”
After we’d picked our fruits, my daughter decided we needed to go on a nature walk, taking the fruits with us! Hello cardio! After we admitted it was actually really lovely inside the forest, I spotted this pile of birch (I think) and loved the shadows in the shot.

“Mom Apple Smiles”
Here is my momma bear! I figured it was about time she got featured and you can see the culprit for all the missing plums! 😁

“Neveah Apple Smiles”
I had to post this shot, I mean…look at her!!! She LOVES apples and was in her element, knowing she could eat as many apples as she could muster. She actually set this shot up; climbed up the ladder, caused me a minor heart attack, sat the top and asked me to take her photograph.

“Chug”
Because I didn’t really want to drive for an hour to the orchard, we decided to make a change and make it interesting by taking the ferry across from Rigaud, over to Oka. It was such a beautiful day and we got lucky with how mild it was-plus it also freaked my mother out because she doesn’t like being on a boat, so it proved to be hilarious to see her refuse to get out of the car on like the world’s slowest boat! 😁

“Fountain”
I don’t have a very great caption or explanation for this shot if I’m being fully honest, I wasn’t sure how it would turn out- I snapped it very quickly after we finished picking, eating and walking around. This was the last shot just before we headed home, so needless to say- not much thought was put into it and bonus- it came out nice….I guess I kinda know what I’m doing.

My Faves: Flat Lays

IMG_4247.JPGIf you would have asked me before I actually began this blog post, how well I thought my flat lays to come out- I would have said, “Not very well…”, but!!! Upon compiling the photos, I have to say I have to pat myself on the back because they’re not too shabby if I should say so myself. 😸

Capricorn.jpg

“Capricorn”- Jan 2018

Earlier this year, I have gifted this makeup bag and liked it so much, I wanted to do a flat lay of it, but I have to say it’s one of my favourite shots. I decided to take a shot of some of my favourite things at the time. So yea, totally humble bragging over here.

spread-joy-e1536494080630.jpg

“Spread Joy”- October 2016

Although this shot was taken in October, it was compiled earlier in the year, as I had “nicked” the jam from the hotel from my sister-in-law’s wedding. I was gifted the tea from a co-worker and just like that, I thought up this shot. Now, I need to go out and look for more vintage crockery!

flatlay 3.jpg
“Supplies”- Jan 2018
Out of all of the flat lays, this one is definitely the one I cringe about; I know I’m probably making something of nothing of it, but yea…I was feeling the vibe of my desk supplies on that day. I think one of the things, I don’t like is that it doesn’t give a “mood” it’s a bit stark for my liking or style, but it’s all learning and maybe someone does like it because I’m more critical of my own work anyhow.

Good Read.jpg

“Good Read”- Jan 2017

If you know me, you know I love all things vintage, so when I came across this book, I was very excited! I haven’t read it yet, but it does help to make some great shots! This is one of my favourite shots, because it fills with the “vintage” feel and because I’m very proud of it. 😸

“Love, Read”- August 2018

This is another shot I love because it’s moody…sense the theme? Nothing like old books to fit the mandate ever so easily! I originally took this shot for National Book Day, with the natural light coming through my bedroom window, a scarf and bam! Here’s the shot.

IMG_5184
“Crazy Rich Leaf”- August 2018
This is a shot I took for my blog, as we wrote a book review on the book. I came across a flat lay shot with leaves and feathers around a book on Pinterest and took inspiration from that shot. In the town square where I live, they built a herb garden to encourage people to pick the herbs and cook with. My mother-in-law brought me a massive pile of bay leaves to dry and cook with. I placed them all in a vase because they also smell nice, then I realised they would also help to pull this shot off! I also love the contrast between the orange and the green!

Pink Coffee

“Pink Coffee”- June 2018
I took a different approach to this shot as my other ones because the flower was giving me really soft and romantic vibes. I took different crops of this shot but ultimately chose this one because I wanted a different proportion.

October Roundup

IMG_5627 (1).jpgUrgh. October hit me hard- mostly because I wasn’t ready for its speed and for the cold that met me. I’ve spent the past month in Montreal, Canada and though it’s not as cold as it would be in January- I packed fairly light clothing for the cold that met me. But it also reaffirmed to me that I no longer like the cold- I feel the chill in my bones…the struggle is real.

“Textures”
One of the side effects of fall is the cold, you get the pleasure of the sun, but then winter teases you by slapping you on the face with a huge gust of wind. 😣 I took this a shot of some of the textures of fabrics which make their way out of storage to help us cope with the cold.

IMG_6208.jpg

“Fluff”
If you’re wondering why I’ve named this shot Fluff- I have no idea, sometimes a name just sticks. I took this shot for my blog as a filler shot, but I really liked its simplicity, but also because of the fact that I  recently bought floral props to up my flat lay game. So here’s fluff. 😊

Red“Red”
This shot is a bit Christmasy, but I just loved the vibrancy of the red of these berries on the bush. One of the best things about fall is the combination and vibrancy of the colours out there in nature! It really does open my eyes up!

Trelace.jpg

“Trelace”
My mother recently moved to a historic area in Montreal, so when we took a walk on a lovely Sunday afternoon, I came across this house with so many lovely details. I’m not really one to like old features in a house, I normally like it for decorative items. But this house made my day!

Autumn Colours.jpg“Autumn Colours”
One of the best things about Canada is the fact that we have 4 distinct seasons, and they are so beautiful to watch the seasons transition. On our walk we came across so many wonderfully changing trees, it was extremely difficult to choose!

IMG_6389

“Hydrangea”
An extremely talented friend of mine painted this for me!! You don’t understand just how touched I was to receive this! It’s not often you get presents that are not only handmade, with such talent, but also with such sentiment. I can’t wait to put it up in my office!

September Roundup

IMG_5184

🍂September, is such a great time of year when it comes to photography. I will be fully open and honest with you, this month was a wind whirl of emotions and stress. The fact that I managed to even get a blog post out, so over all- I’m happy with all of the content in this post! I’ll fully accept that this blog post doesn’t have any “autumny” shots. But! I’ll work on it, I promise.

IMG_5757 (1)“Dream”

I took this shot for an upcoming post on my blog, but loved it so much, I had to share, but also because I didn’t take too many outdoor shots this month. For whatever random reason, it was lots and lots of flat lays. Which can’t be a bad thing because I feel like I’m definitely improving on them!

IMG_5194 (1)

“CRA”

This is yet another shot I took for the blog, but I don’t know if it’s because I enjoyed the book so much, but I love this shot. The leaves in the background, are actually fresh bay leaves I was drying out at the time. Having an orange subject makes it a bit tricky to find accessories that “blend” well in the shot, but I found that the contrast of green and orange- didn’t look too Halloweeny. So win all round! Ps: It’s a great book, I wrote up a review for it on the blog ()!

IMG_5821

“Pond”
Nature and water has always been my sanctuary, this month- I’ve been visiting my family back in Canada. It has been such a great feeling to reconnect and find beautiful areas like this, where I can clear my thoughts. I’ve been to this park many times when I lived here, but it never captured me like this…maybe it’s age.

IMG_5845 (1)“Self-Reflection”

As I hinted in the intro, I had a tough month, so I’ve been trying to find ways to relax, breathe and attempt to take things one step at a time. I’ve always found nature to be that place for me. I took this shot on one of those days, one where I was looking for something good to capture, but instead this shot came about. It symbolizes more of the feeling I felt in that moment, the calm and restfulness I felt looking out on the water.

IMG_5315“Pear”
We went apple picking, because duh! September in Quebec, it’s a must! We chose a different place this time around, because it also had pears and plums, along with apples. We had such a lovely time in Oka and the weather was divine!!

If I’m being honest, the end of this month crept up on me and I wasn’t ready for it all!!! Wah!! Catch you next week!

August Roundup

Ahh, August. For me, the month of August is like a release of breath…you spend June and July attempting to pack in all that is summer that sometimes you forget to enjoy it. Then August strolls in, reminding us that winter is just around the corner and release….we slow down and attempt to savour it just that bit more. Or at least try to. If I could bottle it, August would be the month I’d catch and keep, it is one of my favourite months of the year, warm days and cooling nights and even more spectacular sunsets! Sigh, don’t leave me August.

Morecombe-Palladium

“Morecombe- Palladium”
I will admit that this photograph is technically a cheat, as it was taken at the very end of July, but I didn’t post it, so meh- let me off the hook. We took a trip to the beach in Morecombe and as we were walking back from the pier after getting fish & chips, I spotted this. I genuinely love old advertisements on the side of buildings, it tells a story…

Wood Grain“Wood Grain”
This shot is a bit different, but as I was shooting the shot above, I noticed the detail in the wood I was using as my background. Nothing too fancy or special really, but I just thought it was really nice.

IMG_4902-logo.JPG.jpg“Colouring a Roar”
I took this flat lay for my blog post, but I was really impressed with the natural light that came through from my dining room window, it still puts a smile on my face when I see it, so that’s a win! I still haven’t completed this page as of yet, because I can’t commit to choosing the colours. Oh well..in time.

Seashells

“Seashells”
When we went to Morecombe Beach, we collected a load of seashells. We have them displayed in a glass jar, as the sunlight was streaking through my window, I snapped a few off-centred shots of the shells. Yes, I off-centred it on purpose. Lol.

MDCCCXXXVI“MDCCCXXXVI”
We had a wonderful walk in Bolton Abbey with my daughter and her cousins, the weather showed off to us and we got a work out as well. On our way out, was this beautiful and intricate fountain. I couldn’t think of a name for this shot…so sue me. I really love details and architecture like this. Especially when you look back at how OLD it is! This is one of the reasons I love the UK! When they say throwback they mean THROW BACK!

Abbey Ruins

“Abbey Ruins”
Here’s an awe inspiring shot of the abbey ruins from across the field. This is a great place to visit, even if you don’t do the walks, it’s such a beautiful landscape and the history cannot be replicated.

Chit Chats

“Chit Chats”
This is my daughter and her cousin, they are about a year apart and get along so remarkably well it warms my heart. I have no idea what little plot or devious plan is being hatched, but they just looked so cute and so focused in their conversation, I had to capture it! Don’t be fooled by their cute faces, they do get up to no good! As she’s an only child, I really love to see her create bonds with other children, it helps to make me feel less bad that she will not have siblings.

Yorkshire Rose

“Yorkshire Rose”
I have visited the inside of the chapel at Bolton Abbey before, so this trip my eye geared towards things I hadn’t seen before. Upon entering the “lobby” of the chapel, I looked up and spotted the beautiful detail on the ceiling. I’m not sure when this was done, but I don’t feel like it was there 6 years ago when I was last here. I loved the symmetry of it.

Love Books“Bookish”
I am a massive book lover, and I love buying old “vintage” books, mainly because I love the fact that it’s cloth bound and the yellowing of the papers, it’s just all super cool. I took this flat lay for National Book Lover’s Day and I loved the way it came out. If I were to make any changes, it would be the fact that I forgot that the pages would be white so the natural light makes it a little to bright. Nonetheless, it mood and vibe is spot on, lol..well to me it is.

As August has come to a close and I’m sad about it all, I do welcome autumn, because of the variety of colours nature offers us at this time of the year. I will be taking a trip back to Montreal in the next couple of weeks, and I have already planned a mini trip up north, so that I can hopefully capture some of autumn’s beauty or at the very least-Montreal’s beauty. Stay tuned!

July Roundup

Urgh, this month was a hard one for me; I wish I could put my finger on what has gotten into me, but the truth is I don’t know. I just couldn’t find the gusto to go out and take pics for the majority of this month. It wasn’t until last week when I realised I wouldn’t have much to submit to this month’s roundup, I had better get myself in gear 😣. So, that being said, please forgive me for my lacklustre submissions this month.

Twin Toes

“Twin Toes”
A friend of my sister-in-law recently gave birth to twins and as I had been looking for inspiration and a challenge somewhat, I decided on a whim to ask her if she’d mind if I photographed them. She said yes, and this is some of the results of the mini shoot. I have to admit that it was far tougher than I had anticipated. It’s not like I had never worked with a baby before, it was more the managing and manoeuvring of two babies that made it tricky. I’d like to think I did well, but the truth of the matter is I always find something wrong with my work and this time was no different 😣.

Prickly.jpg“Prickly”
We have a tree in our front yard which some genius planted, it’s a lovely looking thing, except it’s covered in thorns! They get dry and fall off and stab you in your foot, very fun! Anyhow, so after a workout of cutting this tree down, and shouting a few curse words from removing thorns in my foot, my eye caught. Silver lining and all that jazz…but seriously, I still have a piece of thorn in my foot I can’t get out…when do I worry?

Baby Smiles-LogoTwin Face 2 Face-Logo
“Baby Smiles” & “Twin Face 2 Face”
More baby love!! Swoon! There isn’t much to say other than look how adorable and precious they are! It was such a thrill to photograph them and even if they did fuss and cry, I got lots of cuddles in and that can never be a bad thing!

Growl.jpg

“Growl
Ahh, to embrace life with the fervour of a 4 year old! I have to say, there is nothing like looking at the world through the eyes of a child. It can be filled with frustration, roll on the floor laughter and sometimes a pang of yearning. Everyday I strive to be as enthusiastic and in love with life and living as my daughter, if not for her, but for myself.

Orange Flora
“Orange Flora”
This is a lovely unidentified flower in my backyard, I had been waiting all summer for it to bloom, to only bloom for like 2 weeks, which is a bummer. I went back a couple of days ago to see if I could get a better shot of it and unfortunately it has already died back 😮, so I guess I’ll have to wait till next year! Oh well, at least I tried. If any of you are horticulturalists, let me know what this flower is called. Thanks.

Buzzing.jpg
“Buzzin”
Still trying to work on my macro shots, but I have to admit to being pleasantly surprised while editing this shot that not only did I capture the beautiful bee, but also the little hover fly (?) as well. I had a couple shots, but this is best one of the fly in focus, even if the bee is a little fizzy along the left, I’m happy with it. Can’t have it all, can I? Until I invest in the macro lens I’ve been eyeing I’ll stay blissfully happy.

Soft-BrightSoft
“Soft” & “Soft Bright”
I couldn’t decide which edit I preferred for this shot, so I put both…because well, I can. I’m partial to the one on the right because it’s moody, but sometimes adding light to a shot gives a completely different feel, hence the shot on the left. Which do you prefer? Let me know in the comments or you can head over to my Instagram stories and place a vote there….if I remember to do it 😏.

Considering I wasn’t very confident when I began this month’s blog post, I have to say- I’m pretty pleased or like the Brits say “chuffed” with the shots I did manage to pull out of the bag! Bring on August!

February Roundup

Say what?!!?! Where has the actual time began?! I feel like I was just making my NYE resolutions yesterday.

“Gleam”Gleam

I am so so happy and kinda proud of this shot! I literally captured it quickly on the morning run. I really love the way the light and blue skies shows the details in the ice. The contrast of colours are calling me. #proudofmyself

IMG_0842

“All Smiles”

This cheeky little monkey is my four-going-on-fourteen-year-old daughter. I try not to post images of her on social media, but every once in a while I just can’t help myself…I mean…look at her! Luckily, it’s the one moment she was actually standing still, allowing me to take this shot! #bonus

IMG_0687.jpg

“Mini Snow Mountains”

We were hit with so much snow this past month, it was beautiful but also irritating. A Saturday morning, during a break from the snow downpour, I look out at our outdoor table and noticed the way the snow make an interesting pattern through the grates of the table. Nature can really surprise us sometimes.

Weedy

“Weedy”

The good part of having lots of snow is the way it looks on some of the plants and shines a different perspective or creates a different “look”. Believe it or not, this was a lovely plant in the summer, which barely survived my black thumb. That being said, peeking from a lower angle, I thought this looked really nice.

IMG_0967

“Streak”

Yet another, lucky-on-the-morning-run shots. Coming off the back of a whopping amount of snow, the next day was mild with lovely blue skies. I love the watermark in the shot and was actually playing it up a but. I love when the streak of light creates such beautiful imagery.

I have to say, I’m very proud of my haul this month, I’ve stuck by my resolution to take more shots, be less critical and simply post more is well under way! Happy February!
